Feds Asked To Investigate If Clemens Lied

Star Pitcher Testified Earlier This Month

Congress will ask the Justice Department to investigate whether Roger Clemens made false statements under oath to a House committee, The Associated Press has learned.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher, testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform earlier this month about his alleged use of steroids and human growth hormone.

Clemens was at the hearing at the same table as former trainer Brian McNamee, his chief accuser. Clemens has denied the accusations that became public in December's Mitchell Report, compiled by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell. The seven-time Cy Young award winner repeated those denials under oath to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

"I have never used steroids, human growth hormone, or any other type of illegal performance-enhancing drugs," Clemens said. "No matter what we discuss here today, I am never going to have my name restored. I know that a lot of people want me to say that I have taken steroids and be done with it. But I cannot in good conscience admit to doing something that I did not do, even if it would be easier to do so."

Davis and Waxman wrote that they are not in a position to investigate if Clemens lied.

"Our only conclusion is that significant questions have been raised about Mr. Clemens's truthfulness and that further investigation by the Department of Justice is warranted," they wrote. "We ask that you initiate such an investigation. The record of the Committee's proceedings will be made available to the Department of Justice to assist in the investigation."
