PITTSBURGH -- The so-called "spygate" issue surrounding the New England Patriots is getting a lot of buzz, but the Steelers consider it to be much talk about nothing.U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., has been questioning National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell about evidence that disappeared after a Patriots employee was caught illegally videotaping the New York Jets' defensive signals in September. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Specter said he has information that the Patriots taped other teams -- including the Pittsburgh Steelers, before their two AFC title games in 2002 and 2005. New England won the championship both times.
"I think Steelers fans have a lot to be concerned about this, and I'm one of them,'' Specter told the P-G.Team chairman Dan Rooney doesn't agree with Specter."We consider the tapes of our coaching staff during our games against the New England Patriots to be a non-issue," Rooney said in a statement on Friday morning. "In our opinion, they had no impact on the results of those games."As punishment for spying on the Jets, Goodell fined New England Coach Bill Belichick the NFL maximum of $500,000 and ordered the Patriots to pay $250,000 and give up a first-round draft pick."The Steelers fully support the manner in which Commissioner Goodell handled the situation and the discipline that he levied against those who violated league rules," Rooney said in his statement. "We are confident that the commissioner has taken appropriate action in his investigation of this matter, and will do so again if new information arises which requires further investigation and or discipline."
