Pittsburgh Steelers fans know what the playing surface went through late in the season, especially when the Miami Dolphins came to town for the Monday night mud brawl in late November.
That night, the Steelers came out with a 3-0 win, but the remnants of the field left many players and fans wondering whether the team would switch to field turf at the end of the season. The day before the game, team officials opted for an emergency lying of sod after the stadium hosted the WPIAL high school playoffs and a University of Pittsburgh game, leaving the field a mess.On Monday, tractors began stripping the field of its sod. Most NFL players said they prefer natural grass to field turf, along with Steelers running back Willie Parker, who broke his leg late in the season playing on artificial turf in St. Louis.Experts said mid-winter is the best time to lay down sod, but Steelers officials have not commented on whether they are putting down new grass or preparing for artificial turf.
