2007 McKEESPORT, Pa. -- From McKeesport to the WNBA, Swin Cash has been a big success. Now, the Detroit Shock basketball star is giving back with her charitable organization, Cash For Kids, which financially supports other programs that help children."I want to be able to give back to help get kids in the game. We want kids off the streets," Cash said on Wednesday. Her latest project is a renovation of the fields she grew up on in the Harrison Village complex."Next April, we are going to unveil new basketball courts, new softball fields that we are going to do here in McKeesport to help the kids be active," Cash said. Her organization will continue to raise funds toward that effort. She said a New Year's Eve party at G&K Banquet Hall in West Mifflin will be one of the big fundraisers.Cash has won championships at every level, from McKeesport Area High School to the University of Connecticut to the WNBA, as well as an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in 2004.But she said she still considers herself a simple girl who graduated from McKeesport.Cash said she and other McKeesport grads -- like Brandon Short and Mike Logan, who played football with the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers -- are in a position to do positive things for their hometown."I have been able to have conversations with (Steelers quarterback) Charlie Batch, and I see the great things he is doing in Homestead," Cash said. "Myself, Brandon Short, Mike Logan, different people that have come from this area, I think it's about time we start giving back and finding a way to put McKeesport on the map."
