Penguins Try To Turn Leafs In Steel City

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to extend their three-game winning streak tonight when they welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to Mellon Arena.

Pittsburgh has improved to 5-3 on the season thanks to its burst, with the Penguins' latest win, a 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday, kicking off a three-game homestand.

Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside all 36 shots fired his way to record his first shutout of the season and eighth of his career. Evgeni Malkin netted the lone goal of the game.

After a scoreless opening period, the Penguins tallied just 44 seconds into the second stanza. On the power play, Ryan Whitney controlled the puck in the left corner and dished a pass across the crease to Malkin, who redirected the disc over the goal line.

Sidney Crosby also had an assist, giving him a point (2 goals, 8 assists) in seven straight games.

Just seconds later, Pittsburgh had a chance to increase its lead as Jordan Staal was hooked down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. He couldn't convert, however.

The Penguins are 3-2-0 at home this year and wrap this residency on Saturday versus Montreal.

Toronto, meanwhile, will play the first of back-to-back road games tonight, and will be away from the Air Canada Centre for six of its next seven games. The Maple Leafs are 0-1-1 away from home this season and head to New York to battle the Rangers on Saturday.

The club hosted Atlanta on Tuesday, and lost 5-4 in a shootout, as Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal in regulation and scored the deciding goal in the shootout for Atlanta.

Alexei Ponikarovsky forced the overtime after lighting the lamp with under 15 seconds left in the third, while Mats Sundin had a goal and two assists. Sundin now has at least one point in nine of Toronto's first 10 games, and leads the club with 17 points (6 goals, 11 assists) on the young season.

Nik Antropov posted his team-leading seventh goal, Jason Blake recorded three helpers and Vesa Toskala stopped 32 shots in the loss.

On the injury front, Darcy Tucker (knee) is out indefinitely for Toronto.

Pittsburgh and Toronto have already met once this season, with the Penguins posting a 6-4 victory at Air Canada Centre on October 13. Pittsburgh has won four of its last five meetings with the Maple Leafs, though Toronto has captured victory in 10 of the last 15 meetings.

Toronto won seven in a row in Pittsburgh at one point, but has dropped its last two games in the Steel City.
