The attorney for Sacramento Kings backup forward Justin Williams said he is is confident the player will not face criminal charges stemming from an ongoing sexual assault investigation.

Bill Portanova sat down with Sacramento television station KCRA 3 in an exclusive interview to talk about the allegations against Williams.

"There's no doubt the police department is going to find the truth here and the truth here works for us," Portanova said.

Police are investigating a victim's claim that she was sexually assaulted early Oct. 12 at Williams' Natomas home. No arrests have been made.

The alleged victim was described a woman in her 20s who has known Williams for some time.

Sacramento police Sgt. Matt Young said there was one other person present during the alleged attack, but that person's name was not released.

Portanova said he is also conducting his own investigation.

"It's a frightening tale, if it were true," Portanova said. "But there is no drugging of anyone, there was no sexual assault of anyone, and we're going to be able to prove it."

Police executed a search warrant at Williams' home on Wednesday night. Investigators are not saying much, but they did confirm that Williams is not the only target of their investigation.

"There was another person present, we believe," Young said. "We have been in contact with that person. That person has been cooperative with us. We're still trying to ascertain exactly what that person's role was in this incident."

Portanova is also representing that person, who has only been identified as a woman.

Portanova said the intense media attention has been shocking for Williams.

"He is, I would say, profoundly saddened and surprised at the cruelty in the case," Portanova added.

Even if the police investigation finds there is not enough evidence to file charges, Portanova said he is worried about Williams.

"These allegations are about the most explosive, horrible things you could say about a guy, especially about a young guy in the NBA," Portanova said. "It's career-ruining, even if it's proved to be false. The echo hangs in the air. The smell is there like burned toast and it takes years for it to go away, if it goes away."

Police said Williams is cooperating with their investigation.

Williams, who was in Albuquerque, N.M., with the Kings early Thursday, flew home to Sacramento to address the accusations against him.
