The Pittsburgh Steelers already knew they were selling plenty of pink team jerseys.

Now, the team is seeing proof that Pittsburgh has -- by far -- the largest base of female NFL fans.

A Scarborough Sports Marketing survey of 220,354 residents in 75 United States markets last year showed Pittsburgh as the runaway leader, with 34 percent of women who live in the Steelers' market identifying themselves as NFL fans.

"When you have sexy characters like we have in this locker room, I mean, how can women resist us?" Steelers defensive lineman Brett Keisel said jokingly. "It doesn't surprise me."

Green Bay was second with 29 percent, followed by Buffalo (24 percent), Cincinnati (23 percent), Kansas City, Jacksonville, Baltimore and Boston (22 percent) and Denver, Tampa-St. Petersburg and Washington, D.C. (21 percent).

"That's great to have a lot of women fans. You know you always have a lot of men fans," said Steelers nose tackle Chris Hoke.

Nationally, the average was 16 percent, which means that Pittsburgh has more than twice the number of female pro football fans than the average market, based on the survey's results.

"I don't know," said Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. "I love my wife. That's all I can say."

Each summer, more than 300 women pay to go through a simulated day of Steelers training camp, including blocking and running drills and a trip to the training table. The club also sponsors a Football Knowledge for Women classroom-type course.

"Women love competition and plus, you love watching the Steelers," said Steelers fan Jen Brogan. "You love watching them win. It's just fun."

Among men, the Scarborough survey showed Pittsburgh was second to Green Bay in the percentage of fans. Thirty-eight percent of men in Green Bay identified themselves as fans, compared to 35 percent in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh also placed in the Top 10 in percentage of fans who are college graduates (No. 4, 18 percent), percentage of fans with at least one child in the family (No. 6, 24 percent) and percentage of fans who are between the ages of 18 and 24 (No. 7, 7 percent).
