'Pittsburgh Kid' Spadafora Gets Out Of Prison

UPDATED: 4:04 pm EDT August 14, 2007

Former world lightweight boxing champion Paul Spadafora was released from the State Correctional Institution-Albion on Monday.

Spadafora, the 31-year-old McKees Rocks native known as "The Pittsburgh Kid," had been in custody for allegedly violating parole on a sentence he received for shooting his ex-girlfriend.

The state Board of Probation and Parole said there wasn't enough evidence to keep holding him, according to WTAE Channel 4's news exchange partners at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Spadafora was imprisoned in late May, after Nadine Russo filed a protection-from-abuse order against him.

In 2004, Spadafora pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for shooting Russo during an argument in McKees Rocks. He spent seven months in state prison and six months in a boot camp.

The boxer has lived and trained in Erie since being paroled in April 2006, and he has won two fights since getting out of boot camp and making a comeback in the ring.

According to Spadafora's manager, he has resumed training in Erie.

His manager said he hopes to have a fight scheduled within the next six weeks.
