Businesses Around Pens' Arena Site Excited

POSTED: 3:47 pm EDT March 13, 2007

A lot is at stake in the Penguins' arena deal, especially for the people who depend on a healthy and thriving arena.

The deal is great news for the team and its fans, but it's also a big deal for businesses in the area.

On Monday, the general manager of the Marriott City Center, Paul Newmaster, said he was preparing for life without the Pens. But after the new arena announcement, he said his mind has changed.

"To find out today it happened, we are extremely excited," said Newmaster.

With hockey staying in Pittsburgh, other businesses said they believe they will thrive, too.

For Hill District residents, the focus has shifted now to the site of the current arena.

"The community needs to be engaged as talks continue about development of the lower Hill," said Evan Frazier of the Hill House Association. "Very important area for the Hill District, very important area for the city of Pittsburgh and for our region."
