Ravenstahl Sounds Off On Pens Arena OfferPOSTED: 6:39 pm EST January 20,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- The latest offer to keep the Pittsburgh Penguins in town is the best deal an NHL team could really hope for, according to Gov. Ed Rendell.Mayor Luke Ravenstahl echoed those sentiments Saturday, when asked if he thought the Pens would take the offer and stay in Pittsburgh."I'm still confident," Ravenstahl said. "I know, as the governor alluded to yesterday, that this deal is the most lucrative deal ever been given to any sports franchise in Pennsylvania, and really throughout the country, if you look at sports deals. We know what those details are, and we'll be happy to share them with the public once an agreement is reached or not reached."The Pens want a new arena to replace Mellon Arena. In addition to the Pittsburgh proposal, they are considering moving to Kansas City, Mo., where officials are dangling a rent-free offer to play at the new Sprint Center."We know that we've been competitive, like we've said all along, and confident that at the end of the day, we did exactly what we needed to do to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh. I believe the Penguins will understand that, and realize they have a good deal, and agree to it hopefully," said Ravenstahl. Both Rendell and Ravenstahl said they are not worried that there's been no movement yet, saying multimillion dollar deals like this take time. There have been no additional negotiations scheduled.
