WASHINGTON -- All airport workers with access to planes and secure areas are being ordered today to undergo new criminal background checks.
An Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman says re-validations will be done on all airport security IDs. Affected employees include baggage handlers, food service workers and others with access to the planes and tarmacs.
An investigation is under way on how box-cutting tools found on two jets got on the planes. Box cutters were believed to be used by terrorists in the hijackings September 11.
Man Accused Of Using Illegal Passport, Uniforms
Federal prosecutors have charged a man with trying to fly into Chicago with an illegal passport -- and airline uniforms -- on the day of the hijacking attacks.
They say the man, Nageeb Abdul Jabar Mohamed Al-Hadi, was aboard a German airliner when it was grounded in Toronto because of the attacks.
Authorities say he was traveling with a ticket under a different name, and carried three passports from Yemen.
In his luggage -- they say -- were two Lufthansa crew uniforms.
He's in custody in Canada.
Authorities say each of the passports he carried had a different number, name and date of issue.
The FBI says it also recovered a pair of pants that had a small piece of material sewn into a pocket -- on the paper was a series of English and Arabic numbers.
