Buy Versatile Clothes

Buying a few pieces that can be worn to multiple events and locations can do wonders for a battle-worn wardrobe. Buy items that can be dressed up or down with accessories you already own, like jackets and jewelry or a belt and tie.

For the kids, buy items that can withstand not only heavy wear and tear, but also the fashion of the times. Save clothes to hand down to younger children, and don't be shy about giving your kids' old clothes away to friends or receiving such items for your own kids. You don't have to spend top dollar for your children to look nice and feel comfortable.

Don't Dismiss Secondhand

Plenty of secondhand stores sell quality, brand-name clothing that is only lightly used for a fraction of the original price.

"I got a lot of Ralph Lauren clothing from the '80s and '90s that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else and for a better price than any clothing elsewhere," said a fashion-conscious frequent shopper at a brand-name secondhand shop in St. Paul, Minn.

If you know how to sew or can get a friend to teach you, making small items yourself can be a highly cost-effective way to spend your leisure time. It may take plenty of practice to be able to make and tailor your own clothing, but the skill can save you hundreds or even thousands in the long run.

Look Everywhere

Always be on the lookout for a good deal. Browse plenty of sales racks. The more you look, the more you'll find. Although it may not be as pleasant as shopping at a high-end department store, go to local discount stores and check out what they're offering. You may just find a wardrobe gem at an unbeatable price.

Buy Off-Season

It may seem simple, but buying swimsuits in December and coats in July can cut down on costs significantly. Buying off-season or in end-of-season sales will pay off at the bank and in your closet come next season.
