'Ready Set Vote' Is Interactive Voter-Education Campaign

Pennsylvania Voters Can Learn How To Use HAVA-Compliant Systems On Web

UPDATED: 11:38 am EST November 6, 2006

Pennsylvania is continuing its outreach effort to help voters use new electronic voting machines in Tuesday's election.

The new touch-screen machines are compliant with the Help America Vote Act, and the state's "Ready. Set. Vote." program will give voters the opportunity to experience how they work.

Visitors to www.votespa.com may practice by casting a vote in "cultural elections."

For example, a possible question could be: "What is your favorite movie ever made in Pennsylvania?" and the candidates may include "Silence of the Lambs," "Girl, Interrupted," "Rocky" and "Witness," as well as a spot for a write-in.

"Pennsylvania counties will use new electronic voting machines that are compliant with the , or HAVA," Cortes said. "This campaign is to make sure people know what they have to do when they vote next month,"

"I hope that Pennsylvania voters will participate in these cultural elections and, in the process, learn how their new voting machines work," said Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro Cortes. "People will become familiar with the new voting machines each time they vote in one of these contests. Learning is easier when it is fun."

The Department of State worked with Pennsylvania tourism officials and the Pennsylvania Film Office to develop the practice questions.
