Pittsburghers To Choose From Ravenstahl, Acklin, Harris In Tuesday's Election

Monday was the last day before Pittsburgh's mayoral election, and the three candidates took three different methods of getting their message across to potential voters.

Democratic Mayor Luke Ravenstahl helped break ground on new condominiums at the old Otto Milk building in the Strip District. He said it's an example of the economic success that Pittsburgh has enjoyed during his time in office.

"It seems as if we're at a groundbreaking or ribbon-cutting every single week, and I think that's indicative of what's happening in Pittsburgh and the positive momentum that we're experiencing," Ravenstahl said.

Independent challenger Franco "Dok" Harris was in Squirrel Hill on Monday morning, waving at rush-hour traffic at the corner of Greenfield and Panther Hollow roads, thanking voters in their cars for their support.

Harris said his location was in part a tribute to the late mayor Bob O'Connor, who used to stand on the same corner doing the same thing before an election.

Harris described O'Connor as a "very humble man, very wonderful man, tons of passion for the city, and we just don't see that in politics any more, and we're just coming out here to try to follow in those footsteps."

Independent challenger Kevin Acklin spent his morning in Brookline, reflecting on his history of community volunteerism and promising to focus his administration on the city's neighborhoods.

He held a short news conference at the cannon monument where Brookline Boulevard meets Queensboro and Chelton avenues.

"Pittsburghers love their neighborhoods," Acklin said. "What I'm telling Pittsburghers today is that this is something I would continue, to start an unprecedented dedication to volunteerism in our city."

Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
