Harris, 29, is an independent candidate running against the incumbent Democrat Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and independent Kevin Acklin, a Squirrel Hill lawyer.

The endorsement was announced at the Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 headquarters on Liberty Avenue in the Strip District.

"We believe he has the best interests of all working people," said Mark Thomas, the union's business manager.

Harris said his great-grandfather was a member of the union and traveled to San Francisco in the 1930s to work on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Getting the iron workers' endorsement "made my grandmother's entire year," Harris said.

Election Day is Nov. 3.
