The Kennedys have always played a big part in the Democratic National Conventions. They've been inspirational, emotional and sometimes jabbing. But for the first time in decades, ailing Sen. Ted Kennedy may not be at the podium.

Massachusetts party leaders agree that Kennedy's presence in the room alone is bound to make history.

"When he comes tonight -- it will be a very special night. It will be the thing that people talk about. The 2008 convention will be about Ted Kennedy," Boston Mayor Tom Menino said.

"It is going to be off the charts with him here," Gov. Deval Patrick said.
