PITTSBURGH -- Several former Pittsburgh Steelers are waving blue "terrible"-style towels on a five-county tour to support Sen. Barack Obama's Democratic presidential campaign on Friday.
Check Out the ReportThe "Steelers Vote For Change" one-day blitz includes Franco Harris, Dwight "Mad Dog" White, J.T. Thomas, Robin Cole, Larry Brown and Edmund Nelson.
Morning stops included Aliquippa High School and the Carnegie Elementary School football field. In the afternoon, they went to the American Legion in Charleroi, the Uniontown Obama campaign office and the courthouse square in Greensburg."Just because they tell us Sen. Clinton is going to win Pennsylvania, is she going to win it?" Harris asked the Aliquippa crowd, which responded, "No." "We don't throw in the towel," Harris said. The group winds up the tour at Heinz Field with a rally scheduled for 7 p.m."Probably the reason why a couple of people will listen to us is simply because we're similar to what Barack has done over the years," said Cole. "We're not like the Hollywood people in Los Angeles. We're not like the guys in New York that's untouchable. People know me for 32 years, all the time I've lived here I've been grassroots.""He is concerned about things you and I are concerned about, not necessarily what big corporations are concerned about," said Nelson.Although the former players are using the "Steelers" name in their campaign, it does not mean the Steelers organization is also endorsing Obama.A Steelers spokesman said National Football League teams are not permitted to endorse candidates for office.Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney endorsed Obama personally this week, but not on behalf of the team.
