National Primary Day? Experts Explain

It's Simple. Every State Votes On Same Day

How it works: It’s simple. Every state votes on the same day.

Advantages : The calendar is already moving in this direction. On February 5, 2008, twenty-two states will hold either primaries or caucuses.

There wouldn’t be an issue of states voting after one candidate has become the presumptive nominee. In recent cycles, that scenario has played out for dozens of states.

Disadvantages : Critics say a national primary day favors well-funded candidates who can run a national campaign. Lesser-known candidates wouldn’t be able to build momentum early and move up in the polls.

Because large states have the most delegates at stake, critics say small states would be ignored.

Alternative National Primary: Referred to as the National Plan, it would open polls across the country in January and keep them open through May.

People would vote via absentee ballots, which would be tallied every few weeks.

Proponents say it brings the entire country into the process, while challenging campaigns to come up with new strategies on how to build nationwide momentum.
