Key Findings:

  • Rudy Giuliani leads the race for the Republican presidential nomination in Pennsylvania over John McCain, 32 percent to 19 percent. Mitt Romney is third at 12 percent, followed by Fred Thompson at 11 percent. The undecided vote sits at 23 percent.

  • On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton leads Barack Obama, 38 percent to 21 percent, and John Edwards is third with 17 percent.

  • Gov. Ed Rendell's job performance was rated excellent or good by 47 percent of respondents, with 51 percent saying he is doing only a fair or poor job.

  • President George W. Bush's job performance ratings have hit an all-time low in Pennsylvania. Only 23 percent believe he is doing an excellent or good job.

  • This fall, the state Legislature may consider banning smoking in restaurants and bars. Pennsylvanians are divided, with 53 percent saying the issue should be left up to business owners and 46 percent saying a ban should be imposed by the state.

  • The Legislature may also consider changing the date of next year's presidential primary election, currently set for the third Tuesday in April. Thirty-five percent are in favor of that change and 56 percent are opposed to it.

The poll was produced at the Center for Opinion Research at Franklin and Marshall College, in conjunction with WTAE-TV, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Philadelphia Daily News, the Patriot-News in Harrisburg, and WGAL-TV in Lancaster.

There was a sample error margin of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points for the total sample, and plus or minus 4.5 percent for registered voters.
