PITTSBURGH -- Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards is coming to Pittsburgh as part of a campaign swing that will include eight states and 12 cities.Edwards will visit the Hill House on Centre Avenue in the city's Hill District neighborhood to speak about poverty on Tuesday evening. The appearance is part of a three-day tour that the former North Carolina senator hopes will draw attention to the struggles people face in urban and rural communities.
Edward was in Canton, Miss., on Monday to speak with poultry plant employees. He said their plight demonstrates the government's shortcomings in addressing workers' wage and health issues.During his stop at Mount Levi Full Gospel Church in Canton, Edwards said that the government must enforce its labor laws, raise the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour and provide universal health care for all workers.Edwards' tour focuses on poverty, families living on less than $18,000 a year. The Census Bureau's last report in 2004 showed more than 134,000 people living below the poverty level in Allegheny County.
