Sign A NYC-Bound Banner Outside PNC Park
Penguins To Donate To Relief Fund
UPDATED: 12:07 p.m. EDT September 16, 2001
Pirates fans will be invited to send a friendlier-than-usual message to New York Mets fans.
A Bucs-Mets game scheduled for Monday at Shea Stadium has been moved to PNC Park because of ongoing cleanup and other problems associated with last week's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
A 50-by-15-foot "God Bless America" banner will be available for fans to sign outside the ballyard on the North Shore. After the series ends Wednesday, the banner will be sent to the Mets and their fans.
The Pirates will donate to the United Way September 11th fund outside the park at about 3 p.m., after which fans can contribute at several locations.
Fans will observe a moment of silence before the game followed by the National Anthem and God Bless America, to be performed by members of the Air Force Reserve 911th Airlift Wing.
Corrections officers at the State Correctional Institution-Pittsburgh will serve as colorguards.
The team also hopes to pass out miniature American flags to all fans -- if they are available despite recent shipping problems related to the attacks.
The Pirates held a team prayer session on Friday prior to batting practice.
Meanwhile, the Penguins will donate all money from remaining ticket sales for their two home preseason games to disaster relief funds.
About 3,000 tickets remain for the Sept. 24 game against the Atlanta Thrashers and the Sept. 29 game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, both of which will be played at 7:30 p.m. at Mellon Arena.
The seats, which will cost $20, will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.
"All across America, people are looking for ways to contribute in the aftermath of these attacks, and we just think this is one of the ways we can help," said Tom Rooney, the president of Team Lemieux LLC.
Tickets are available at the Mellon Arena Gate One Box Office and all TicketMaster locations. Tickets are also available by phone and online.
