Postal Service Update

POSTED: 6:17 p.m. EDT September 13, 2001

U.S. Postal Service representatives in Pittsburgh told WTAE-TV's Wendy Bell that pick-up and delivery is running on schedule.

The representatives said that only about 20 percent of letters are transported by air, so delivery delays are minimal.

A letter sent from Pittsburgh to the West Coast normally takes between two and three days to arrive. With the grounding of most flights in the country, add an extra day to that. No one knows when shipments to Manhatten will resume.

If you are mailing a package larger than 16 oz., you will have to mail it at the post office. Do not drop it in a mailbox, even with correct postage.

The postal service still guarantees its Express and Priority Mail service.

As for UPS, the ground system is operating normally, but packages are not moving into or out of the country.

Federal Express said that many of its shipments likely will be delayed 24 to 48 hours. Because of that, the company has suspended its money-back guarantee until airports fully resume their normal operations.
