A Munhall, Pa., woman called 911 shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, saying her brother, Dave Karnes, was attempting to help free several people trapped under 40 feet of rubble near the Forward Hotel in Manhattan.
He called his sister, Joy Karnes, at her home in the Pittsburgh community after failing to reach 911 officials in New York. She contacted authorities in New York, leading to the rescue of two New York City police sergeants.
"He's very heroic," said Joy Karnes. "He said he was going to go there and save lives, and he was right there."
Dave Karnes (pictured, left) , a Steel Valley High graduate and current CPA, once worked in the World Trade Center and was there during the 1993 terrorist attack.
The former U.S. Marine and a friend went to Manhattan to offer assistance.
Allegheny County 911 coordinator Brian Jones said Joy Karnes contacted him with specific directions to where he was located.
