Greensburg Student Wants Sign Language Class

Enriquez Wants Generation To Learn ASL

UPDATED: 5:33 p.m. EDT May 15, 2001

A Greensburg Salem High School student is lobbying to change his school's curiculum to include a sign language class.

Tenth-grader Harold Enriquez's uncle is deaf. His mother takes a sign language class, and his uncle reads lips, but the 16-year-old student said that he wants his generation to be able to communicate with the deaf and hard of hearing.

Enriquez started petitioning in January. He has received about 150 student signatures.

Greensburg Salem principal Tom Shipley told WTAE-TV's Marcie Cipriani that because of Enriquez's petitioning, he is meeting with representatives from Westmoreland County Deaf Services to discuss options for adding the class.

However, he said that finding money and a teacher could be obstacles.
