It's The Maine Thing

Whale Watching, Lighthouses, Lobsters Are State’s Mainstays

UPDATED: 10:27 pm EDT September 30, 2009

No matter what the vacation you’re looking for, you’ll find it in Maine. There is whitewater rafting, snowmobiling, state parks, beaches, lighthouses, mountains, ocean or lake cruises, shopping, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds and of course, award-winning restaurants serving fresh Maine lobster.

Kennebec and Moose River Valleys The Kennebec and Moose River travel ways are rich in history, culture and natural beauty. Surrounded by lakes and forest, these travel ways will lead you to see breathtaking waterfalls, scenic hikes along the Appalachian Trail and East Coast Greenway, tours of forts and museums, along with some of the best whitewater rafting and sport fishing. Whether you’re planning a day trip, a romantic weekend, a week with your family, even a spa getaway, there’s something for everyone here.

The Burnt Island Living Lighthouse tour is a great family activity. The Lighthouse’s beautifully restored buildings are a “living” history museum where actors in period clothing re-enact the life of a lighthouse keeper and his family, giving visitors a glimpse into his day-to-day tasks.

Cap’n Fish’s Whale Watch and Scenic Boat Tours originated whale watching in Boothbay Harbor and has been whale watching longer than anyone else in the region. Cap’n Fish’s has been a family-held corporation for three generations -- its ships are the newest in the region, carry the latest whale-tracking equipment, and the company's expert narrators will teach you about any of the whales, marine life, or birds that you might see on your whale watch.

The Maine Maritime Museum is the perfect window into the state’s nautical heritage. You’ll experience Maine’s rich seafaring history, from watercraft and lobstering, to shipbuilding and sea trade, you’ll listen to stories about dangerous voyages, experience how a shipbuilder’s family lived during the 1890s, smell sawdust from famous ship timbers and discover the wonders of Maine’s maritime culture.

Cook’s Lobster House is a great spot to enjoy Maine seafood. Maine’s seafood has an outstanding reputation, in part because of the Gulf of Maine, with its deep, cold waters that help ensure the lobster’s quality and freshness. While you’re enjoying the food, you’ll marvel at the view, as every seat at Cook’s provides spectacular views of Bailey Island.
