Penguins Will Raise 2009 Championship Banner At Mellon Arena

A line of Penguins and Steelers fans stretched along Grant Street and Forbes Avenue on Thursday morning, waiting for a chance to see the Stanley Cup and the Vince Lombardi Trophy up close.

Both trophies were on display in the portico of the City-County Building from 8 a.m. until noon, as Pittsburgh and Allegheny County celebrated the unprecedented accomplishment of two local teams winning titles in the same year.

Many fans brought their cameras and took photos of themselves and friends with the championship hardware.

The Penguins will raise the Stanley Cup banner at their season opener Friday night during a pregame ceremony that fans will also be able to watch on the big screen outside Mellon Arena.

Gates at Mellon Arena are set to open at 6 p.m., and the team is asking fans to be seated by 7:25 p.m. for the raising of the banner.

Fans who do not have tickets can watch the big screen outside Gate 3. The big screen started operating on Wednesday morning, showing playoff game highlights and the Penguins' Stanley Cup championship DVD.
