PITTSBURGH -- The NHL's free agency period continues, and some members of the Pittsburgh Penguins have decided to stay with the Stanley Cup champs while others will continue their careers elsewhere next season. The Pens have added forwards Wade Brookbank and Wyatt Smith to their roster. Both players signed one-year deals.Brookbank, 31, split time with the Carolina Hurricanes and the AHL's Norfolk Admirals last season. He posted one goal in 27 games with the Hurricanes and one assist in 24 games for the Admirals.Brookbank previously spent time in the Pens organization as a member of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006-07.Smith, 32, tallied 19 goals and 47 points in 71 games with the Admirals and San Antonio Rampage in the AHL last season. He has had stints in the NHL with Phoenix, Nashville, Minnesota, Colorado and New York Islanders over eight seasons. The Pens also re-signed restricted free agent goalie John Curry.Curry, 25, inked a two-year deal for $1 million. It is also a two-way contract. The Pens signed goalie Brent Johnson to a one-year contract on Tuesday.Johnson, 32, finished with a 12-6-2 record in 21 games with the Washington Capitals during the 2008-09 season. He had a .908 save percentage and 2.1 goals-against average. He has a career 111-94-12 record in 247 NHL games.Johnson is expected to compete with John Curry for a spot as Marc-Andre Fleury's backup this season.Curry remains a restricted free agent with the Pens.Johnson is the grandson of NHL Hall of Famer Sid Abel and the son of goalie Bob Johnson, who played 12 games with the Pens during the 1974-75 season.Despite the name similarity, he is not related to late Pens coach "Badger" Bob Johnson. On Friday, the Pens signed veteran defenseman Jay McKee to a one-year contract. He recently had the final year of a four-year deal bought out by St. Louis after scoring one goal and eight points in 69 games last season. In a statement, Pens general manager Ray Shero called the 6-foot-4-inch McKee "a strong defensive defenseman" and "an outstanding shot-blocker" who's expected to help the team's young players develop.McKee essentially replaces Rob Scuderi, who cashed in on his name-making performance in the playoffs by signing for a reported $13.6 million over four years with the Los Angeles Kings. The 30-year-old Scuderi single-handedly kept Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup hopes alive when he blocked shots by Detroit's Johan Franzen in front of a wide-open net in Game 6 of the finals.Earlier this week, forward Chris Conner signed a one-year contract with the Pens. The 5-foot-8, 180-pounder had a career-high 13 points on 10 assists and three goals in 38 games with Dallas last season.Penguins forward Ruslan Fedotenko, one of the team's top priorities heading into the offseason, is staying in Pittsburgh. He signed a one-year contract worth $1.8 million, taking a cut from the $2.25 million he made last season when he had 16 goals and 23 assists, plus another 14 points in the playoffs.Following the Pens’ Stanley Cup victory, Fedotenko opened the doors of his South Hills home to neighbors and friends to thank them for their support by signing autographs and taking pictures.

Guenin, 26, is the third Pittsburgh native to become a member of the Pens in the last three seasons, joining Bill Thomas (Fox Chapel) and Ryan Malone (Upper St. Clair).Guenin (6-2, 210 pounds) has played 12 career games in the NHL as a defenseman with the Philadelphia Flyers since 2006. He was a fourth round draft pick by the New York Rangers in 2002.Defenseman Hal Gill is also gone, having signed a two-year deal worth $4.5 million with the Montreal Canadiens. Gill was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Pens in February 2008.While the Pens lost two defensemen, they also added a forward in Mike Rupp, 29, who signed a two-year deal worth $825,000 per season. Rupp played in 72 games with the New Jersey Devils last season, recording three goals, six assists and 136 penalty minutes.“We are excited to have Mike as a part of our hockey club for the next two seasons,” Shero said in a statement. “He brings a physical presence along with leadership and experience as a Stanley Cup Champion.”Forward Petr Sykora, who spent the last two seasons with the Pens, is available to any team wishing to sign him. He tallied 46 points in 76 regular season games, but was inactive for the rest of the regular season before going in and out of the lineup in the playoffs.Forwards Bill Guerin and Craig Adams were re-signed to new deals -- one year at $2 million for the 38-year-old Guerin, and two years at $550,000 per for the 32-year-old Adams. Both took pay cuts to stay with the Pens. The signing of Adams all but signaled the end of Mike Zigomanis' career in Pittsburgh. Zigomanis was acquired from Phoenix in October to help with faceoffs and penalty killing, but suffered a shoulder injury in December and never returned to the lineup. Also departing the Pens was backup goalie Mathieu Garon, who agreed to a two-year deal worth $2.4 million with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was traded to the Pens from the Edmonton Oilers in January. The Pens have already signed fellow defenseman Alex Goligoski, 23, to a three-year contract worth $5.5 million. He spent time with the Pens and their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre last season but is expected to remain in Pittsburgh all of next season.Defenseman Philippe Boucher is also an unrestricted free agent.Stay with WTAE Channel 4 and ThePittsburghChannel.com for all the latest Pens free agency news.
