PITTSBURGH -- Fans chanted "one more year" when Bill Guerin stepped to the stage at Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup victory parade on July 15 -- and that's exactly what they'll get. The Pittsburgh Penguins -- fresh off the Stanley Cup victory less than three weeks ago -- have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with right wing Bill Guerin, the team's general manager, Ray Shero, announced on the Penguins' Web site at about 8 p.m. Monday."My heart said I want to come back here," Guerin told WTAE Channel 4's Sally Wiggin during the parade.Guerin had hinted that he wanted a longer term deal after the season ended, but WTAE Channel 4's news-exchange partner at The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Guerin will make $2.85 million against the salary cap for next season alone. The 38-year-old, who was set to face free agency Wednesday, had seven goals and 15 points in 24 playoff games. He's a 17-year NHL veteran from Worcester, Mass., and was acquired from the New York Islanders on March 4.“We are excited to agree to terms with Billy on this one-year deal,” Shero said on the team's Web site. “He made a tremendous impact on this team with his scoring ability, physical play and outstanding leadership and was a key factor in our drive to the Cup. I know our players, coaches and fans will be happy to have him back in Pittsburgh.”Also Wednesday, free agency opens up for Ruslan Fedotenko, Petr Sykora and Miroslav Satan, Rob Scuderi, Hal Gill, Philippe Boucher and Mathieu Garon.
