Pens Vs. Pens: Could 2008 Pens Take On Stanley Cup Team Of 1992?

POSTED: 3:59 pm EDT May 14, 2008
UPDATED: 6:06 pm EDT May 14, 2008

It's been 16 long seasons since the Pittsburgh Penguins last lifted Lord Stanley's cup.

Survey: 2008 Pens Vs. 1992 Pens: Who Would Win?

This year, the Pens are battling the Philadelphia Flyers for their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals since the 1991-1992 season, which was led by stars Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr.

Some argue this year's team, led by captain Sidney Crosby, could be the best in Pens history.

So who would win in a battle between the Pens from 1992 and this year's cup contenders?

Only in a virtual world could Crosby skate against Lemieux while he was in his prime. That's exactly what the Web site WhatIfSports.com has done.

WhatIf allows you to pit the 1992 champion team, widely regarded as the best in team history, against the red-hot current crop of Pens.

The two faced-off in a simulated best-of-seven showdown inside the Mellon Arena with thousands of fans watching on a big screen outside.

Game 1 went to the Pens of today with Evgeni Malkin scoring a hat trick.

Ex-Pens goalie Tom Barrasso was pulled after allowing six goals in an 11-3 loss.

Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone, who plays for the Pens of now, scored twice against his childhood idols in Game 2, helping the young Pens to a 7-5 victory.

In Game 3, fans inside the Igloo wore all white, and Malkin came up big again for the young team, scoring four times and forcing Barrasso from the game.

Today's Pens took that game with a score of 5-3.

Lemieux brought the old timer Pens back in Game 4 with four straight goals and 7-2 victory.

But the tension was gone early in Game 5. Petr Sykora scores twice, giving the current Pens all-time bragging rights with a 6-2 win.

Despite being dominated in the simulated series, the 1991-1992 Pens have one thing over the current crop and that's a Stanley Cup championship.

Crosby and company still need five more wins before they can celebrate that achievement.
