Red Wings Stop Sharks' Winning Streak At Six

POSTED: 11:53 pm EST November 5, 2009

(Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg tied the game in the third period and added another goal in the shootout, as the Detroit Red Wings edged the San Jose Sharks, 2-1, in a matchup at Joe Louis Arena between the last two Presidents' Trophy-winning clubs.

Chris Osgood stopped 33 shots and both shootout attempts for the Red Wings, who have won three straight games and four of five overall.

"That's three games in a row (Osgood) can feel real good about himself," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "It's important to get on a roll and feel good about yourself and how you play. We're playing well in front of him, but he's really battling and making saves."

Logan Couture scored his first career goal for the Sharks, who had a six-game winning streak snapped. Evgeni Nabokov finished with 35 saves in defeat.

Pavel Datsyuk was the first shooter for Detroit and fooled Nabokov with a backhand-forehand deke, lifting the puck over the goaltender's right pad.

Dan Boyle and Ryane Clowe were turned away by Osgood before Zetterberg secured the win in the extra segment's third round, beating Nabokov on the forehand.

Couture's tally opened the scoring at 14:41 of the second period. Joe Callahan, who was making his Sharks debut following a call up earlier Thursday from the club's AHL affiliate in Worcester, was allowed to push the puck up the ice uncontested and into the Detroit zone, where he dished off to the youngster Couture.

San Jose's top pick (ninth overall) in 2007, Couture skated down the right side and fired a wrister from the faceoff dot that beat Osgood between the pads.

"Yeah, it's definitely one I'll remember for the rest of my life," Couture said about his first NHL goal. "It's too bad it didn't come in a win."

Zetterberg tied the score at 5:38 of the third when he pried the puck loose from under Nabokov's left pad and banged it into the open net.
