Pittsburgh Penguins (14-7-0) At Ottawa Senators (9-6-3), 7:30 P.M.
(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to notch a third straight victory as they begin a three-game road trip with this evening's clash against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place. Pittsburgh had been mired in a four-game losing streak recently, but that skid ended Saturday at home as Evgeni Malkin returned from injury and notched three assists in a thrilling 6-5 overtime win over Boston. The Penguins made it two wins in a row with Monday's 5-2 victory against visiting Anaheim. Malkin was held pointless in the win over the Ducks, but Pittsburgh is still glad to have him back in the lineup after going 2-5-0 during the Russian centerman's seven-game absence due to a shoulder injury. Matt Cooke tallied twice to help Pittsburgh breeze past the Ducks at Mellon Arena. Bill Guerin, Jordan Staal and Martin Skoula also scored for the Penguins, who hadn't won consecutive games since October 28 and 30. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 23-of-25 shots to record his 11th win of the season. "We need everybody to contribute," said Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby. "There are some areas we still want to improve on, but we'll take the two points." Despite Malkin's return, the Pens still have tons of injuries to deal with at the moment. Defenseman Alex Goligoski was the latest to go down as he suffered a left leg injury against Boston and is expected to miss the next two-to-three weeks. Goligoski joins the list of injured blueliners for the Penguins as Sergei Gonchar (broken left wrist), Kris Letang (bruised right shoulder) and Brooks Orpik (lower body) are all currently out of commission. The Pens will try to end a three-game road losing streak after beginning the season with wins in their first seven tests away from the Steel City. Pittsburgh will also visit Atlanta and Florida during this three-game swing. Ottawa will try to win back-to-back games for the first time in over a month when it takes the ice tonight. The Senators last posted consecutive victories when they downed Tampa Bay and Montreal on October 15 and 17, respectively. The Sens ended a two-game slide by notching a close victory over visiting Toronto on Tuesday. Mike Fisher scored two goals, including the game-winner late in the second period, to lift Ottawa to the 3-2 decision over the rival Maple Leafs. Milan Michalek netted a power-play goal to account for the other score, while Pascal Leclaire turned back 30-of-32 shots for the win. "We needed him and he was at his best. He played very well that last 10 minutes and made some great saves," said Ottawa head coach Cory Clouston of Leclaire. "I thought his rebound control was very good and his play in traffic was outstanding." Alexandre Picard, Chris Campoli and Alex Kovalev each added two assists in the win. For Kovalev, who signed a two-year $10 million deal with Ottawa in the offseason, it was his first multi-point game in a Senators uniform. The veteran winger and former Penguin has four goals and six assists in 18 games this year. The Sens are 1-0-1 so far on a five-game homestand and they still have tests against Buffalo and Washington remaining on the residency. Ottawa is 6-3-3 as the host this season. Pittsburgh already has a win at Scotiabank Place this year as the Pens began the season series against the Sens with a 4-1 victory on October 12. The win ended a two-game slide in Ottawa for the Penguins, who have still lost three of four and six of their last eight overall encounters with the Sens.
