PITTSBURGH -- The car of former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najeh Davenport was stolen Tuesday afternoon.Police said Davenport's 1970 Chevrolet Impala was taken while he left it running outside a family member's home in the 200 block of E. Meyers Avenue at about 1 p.m.Davenport told WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Shannon Perrine that he worked in a store to save $500 to buy the car when he was 15, but has since invested $35,000 to customize and restore it.Witnesses told Zone 3 police they saw someone take the car and Davenport pursue in another vehicle."He [Davenport] pursued. Who wouldn't? You've got an old car -- a nice car -- someone takes it. You chase it -- that's all I know," said neighbor Gary McClelland.Police said Rodney Terrell Green, 22, fled in Davenport's Impala toward Amanda Street, striking four parked vehicles before fleeing on foot toward a Foodland on Brownsville Road."That car was totaled in the front. It was a nice car," said neighbor Leonard Heinz.Davenport spotted Green and stopped him in the parking lot with the help of witnesses until police arrived.Police said Green, of E. Meyers Avenue, will be charged with 4 counts of accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property, theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property.Davenport played with the Steelers from 2006-2008.
