Rashard Mendenhall, Steelers' No. 1 Draft Pick, Robbed At Gunpoint

Rookie RB Spent Weekend At Minicamp In Pittsburgh

UPDATED: 5:31 pm EDT May 5, 2008

Running back Rashard Mendenhall, the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2008 first-round draft pick, was held up at gunpoint in Chicago but unharmed.

The robbery was reported at about 2 a.m. Monday along the Chicago lakefront, near 39th Street and Lake Shore Drive, police said.

"We've heard about it," Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett said. "We're still gathering information. We know he's OK."

Two robbers got away with Mendenhall's cell phone, cash and wallet, according to the player's agent. No arrests have been made.

So far, Chicago police have only said that a man and a woman were robbed, not identifying the man as Mendenhall.

However, Mendenhall's mother and agent both confirmed that Mendenhall had been robbed at the location that police described.

Mendenhall spent the weekend at a Steelers minicamp in Pittsburgh before going to Chicago on Sunday.

He was selected from the University of Illinois with the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the NFL draft last month.
