Colston, Anderson Earn Rookie Honors For October

POSTED: 2:19 pm EST November 2, 2006

(Sports Network) - New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston and Chicago Bears defensive end Mark Anderson have been selected as the NFL's top rookies for the month of October.

Colston, the 252nd of 255 players chosen in the NFL Draft, had 18 catches for the month and 16 resulted in either a first down or touchdown. He hauled in four touchdown passes and averaged 20.7 yards per reception.

The Hofstra product notched a pair of 100-yard receiving games, including a 163-yard performance with two touchdowns against the stout Baltimore defense on October 29.

Colston leads all rookies this season with 577 receiving yards and six touchdown catches, and his 33 receptions trail only teammate Reggie Bush's 42 catches among first-year players.

Anderson recorded six sacks during October, notching at least one in all four games. He leads the Bears and all NFL rookies with 7 1/2 sacks this season.

The fifth-round pick out of Alabama totaled 16 tackles for the month and had a forced fumble in each of the last three games during October. One led directly to a defensive touchdown in Chicago's remarkable comeback win over Arizona on October 16.

Anderson, who became the first Chicago player to win defensive rookie honors since Brian Urlacher in October of 2000, has helped the Bears to a 7-0 mark.

Other nominees for the offensive player included running backs Joseph Addai of Indianapolis, Laurence Maroney of New England, Leon Washington of the New York Jets, Mike Bell of Denver and Bush from New Orleans.

Defensive consideration went to Green Bay linebacker A.J. Hawk, Denver defensive end Elvis Dumervil and Kansas City defensive end Tamba Hali.
