NFL Game Summary - Pittsburgh At Oakland

POSTED: 9:05 pm EST October 29, 2006

(Sports Network) - Oakland's defense capitalized on four Ben Roethlisberger interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, as the Raiders held on to beat the Steelers, 20-13, at McAfee Coliseum.

Oakland (2-5) now has its first winning streak of the season, one week after downing the Cardinals, 22-9 at home.

On the down side, their offense was particularly dreadful, managing just 98 yards of total offense in the game.

Rookie quarterback Andrew Walter was 5-of-14 passing for 51 yards while Justin Fargas carried 18 times for 55 yards rushing. LaMont Jordan added 21 yards on the ground, as he battled soreness in his back and did not see a lot of playing time.

The Oakland receivers pulled down just five passes and certainly weren't helped by the season debut of Jerry Porter, last year's leading receiver. He had just one catch on the day, good for 19 yards.

Porter was inactive the first four games and then suspended for the last two for fighting with head coach Art Shell.

Pittsburgh (2-5) has now dropped four of five since its season-opening win over the Dolphins.

Roethlisberger got medical clearance to start the game, but wasn't able find a rhythm until late. He finished 25-of-37 for 301 yards. He was also sacked five times.

The performance came one week after Roethlisberger suffered a concussion on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Falcons defensive end Chauncey Davis. Knocked out on the play, Roethlisberger was forced to leave in the third quarter of the Steelers' 41-38 overtime loss and remained questionable all week.

Willie Parker was the team's leading rusher on the day, gaining 83 yards on 22 carries. Hines Ward, coming off a career-high 171 receiving yards last week, had eight catches for 81 yards.

Roethlisberger was intercepted twice on the Steelers' first three possessions, with the second turnover leading to an Oakland touchdown.

On Pittsburgh's second series, Roethlisberger's pass deep right intended for Nate Washington was picked off by Raiders cornerback Fabian Washington. Oakland couldn't capitalize on the turnover, however, and they were forced to punt.

Three plays later Roethlisberger found another silver and black jersey, promptly depositing the football into the arms of Nnamdi Asomugha. The cornerback returned it 24 yards to paydirt to put the Raiders on the board with 6:12 remaining in the first.

Pittsburgh answered in the second stanza, making it 7-6 after a couple of Jeff Reed field goals.

First, the Steelers orchestrated a 12-play, 47-yard scoring drive. The march was capped off by Reed's 29-yard field goal at 10:18 to cut the deficit to four.

Then, Pittsburgh marched down to the Oakland 21 with 3:13 remaining in the half, but the drive stalled and they had to settle for another Reed kick. The field goal split the uprights from 39-yards out, making it a 7-6 game.

Oakland upped its lead on the ensuing kickoff, as Chris Carr returned the ball 50 yards. The key play set up an eventual Janikowski 19-yard field goal with four ticks left on the clock.

Janikowski's second field goal of the afternoon, at 12:23 in the third, extended the Raiders advantage to 13-6. Oakland had a chance to pick up the first down on third-and-five, but Walter's pass to Randy Moss was dropped. It was Moss' second drop of the game and sixth in the last two contests.

After a scoreless third for the Steelers, Roethlisberger started the fourth quarter by tossing his third interception of the contest. On 4th-and-1 and working out of the shotgun, he fired a short pass over the middle that was pulled down by Kirk Morrison. The pick stopped the Steelers drive at the Oakland 36 and sent Roethlisberger to the sideline with his head in his hands.

After forcing the Raiders to go three-and-out, the Steelers found their way back into the redzone. The end result was the same, however, as Roethlisberger was picked off by Carr, who returned the ball 100 yards to put Oakland on top, 20-6, with 9:32 remaining in regulation.

Pittsburgh answered with a quick score at 7:19, as Willie Parker recorded his first touchdown catch of the season. On first-and-ten from the Oakland 25, Parker took a short pass from Roethlisberger and rumbled all the way to the endzone. The six-play, 54-yard drive cut the Steelers' deficit to 20-13.

On the ensuing possession, Joey Porter snared his second interception of the season, picking off Walter for the first time in the game. The turnover seemed to set the table for a potential game-tying score, but the Steelers couldn't punch it in, burning five straight chances after a first-and-goal from the one. The final play of the drive, an incomplete pass thrown by Roethlisberger, sealed the Steelers fate.

Pittsburgh got the ball back one last time, but with five seconds remaining Roethlisberger's 49-yard pass to Washington was pulled down four yards short of the endzone.

"Well in my wildest dreams I didn't think I'd be playing this bad," said Roethlisberger afterward. "So I have to pick it up. It's the bottom line, and I'll point the thumb right at me. That's where it starts, and coach says look in the mirror, and I need to look in the mirror. We need to figure something out, and figure out how I need to start playing better football. Like I said, if I start playing better football, I think we can be a better team."

Game Notes:

Head linesman John McGrath left late in the first quarter with a leg injury and was taken for x-rays. The game continued with six officials instead of seven...Verron Haynes left the game with 8:23 remaining in the fourth with an apparent ankle injury. He did not return...Oakland leads the all-time series 9-8.

NFL Headlines

NFL
An interception of Joe Flacco by Colts linebacker Gary Brackett snuffed out a deep Ravens drive late in the fourth quarter, as Indianapolis remained unbeaten by outlasting Baltimore, 17-15, at M&T Bank Stadium. The Ravens (5-5), who had moved the ball consistently on Indianapolis (10-0) for much of the day but had to settle for five Billy Cundiff field goals, moved within range of a sixth Cundiff field goal when Flacco led them to the Colts' 14-yard line with 2:49 to play. But on a 3rd- and-7 play, Brackett stepped in front of Flacco's short pass attempt to running back Ray Rice, and a subsequent first-down by the Colts, coupled with some questionable end-of-game management by the Ravens, helped Indy move to 10-0 for the second time in four seasons. The Colts have won 19 consecutive regular-season games since a loss at Tennessee last October 27, the second-longest streak in NFL history behind the Patriots' 21-game run from 2006-08. The win marked the seventh consecutive time, including playoffs, that the Colts have won in their former home of Baltimore. Peyton Manning completed 22-of-31 passes for 299 yards and a first-quarter touchdown to keep Indianapolis unbeaten, but also threw a pair of interceptions and finished with fewer than 300 yards for just the second time this season. Joe Flacco was 23-of-35 for 256 yards and the key interception, with six of the completions for 104 yards coming in the second half to wideout Derrick Mason, who starred with nine catches for 142 yards on the day.
