Route 65 in Kilbuck Township is still closed in both directions because of a landslide, but the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has set a target date for its reopening

Crews said they will try to provide limited passage, one lane in both directions, but there is no guarantee. They're pushing to have the entire roadway reopened by Oct. 7.

Crews are removing tons of rocks, dirt and trees that fell onto the highway from the new Wal-Mart development at the former Dixmont State Hospital site.

A spokesman for PennDot said the land gave way on Tuesday evening and continued sliding overnight Wednesday.

PennDOT said they want the road opened as soon as possible, but want it to be safe. They said they don't want another landsight to happen.

    Northbound Detour:

  • Right on Camp Horne Road
  • Left on Mount Nebo Road
  • South on Interstate 79 to Route 65 Emsworth-Sewickley exit (#66)
  • Southbound Detour:

  • Follow above detour route in reverse

In a statement, Wal-Mart said its "immediate priority" is to help the site developer, ASC Development, Inc., stabilize the hillside and clean the road. The company said it will also investigate with ASC to determine the cause of the slide.

In April, there was another landslide in this area of Route 65. Contractors were using blasting devices to remove a hillside, and it came crashing on the road.

Senex Explosives, based in South Fayette, was cited for the April landslide.
