Sen. Bob Regola's Statement

The following statement was released on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, by Sen. Bob Regola, R-Hempfield Township.

The death of Louis Farrell is a tragedy of immeasurable proportions. Lou was a neighbor, a family friend and a friend of my young sons, John Ross and Bobby, and we all mourn his loss.

I have not spoken publicly about this tragedy, other than to release a brief condolence statement, out of respect for the family and the incredible grief they must feel. Also, having respect for District Attorney John Peck, the State Police and the investigative process, I wanted to let the investigation come to a conclusion before any further public comments.

I remained silent despite numerous media reports that have created serious misimpressions and fueled a great deal of erroneous and hurtful speculation to all concerned, to include the memory of a 14 year old boy and my 16 year old son.

I can only speak about facts regarding my family and this case.

1. Neither my son Bobby nor I had any involvement in the tragic death of Lou Farrell. I was in Harrisburg during the entire period in question. Bobby was away from home all day at Idlewild Park with his girlfriend and her parents, they brought him home late that night. He was then visited by a relative at home, and in the house with the security system activated. The security records, which have been turned over to investigators, show that no one left or entered the house during the time he was alone.

2. Despite reckless speculation about my gun, the gun was stored in a case in my upstairs bedroom. It was not loaded and was not easily accessible, as I have young children in my home. I, like many other Westmoreland Countians, keep a gun for safety reasons. This tragedy should not be misrepresented and exploited by anti-gun advocates.

3. My son and I have cooperated with the police regarding this investigation. Both of us spoke at length to the police immediately after the tragic event was discovered, and remained available to them throughout the day. We also provided to them items that they requested. We remain committed to cooperating with them as appropriate.

I would ask all those speculating publicly or privately to respect the Farrell family, my family, including my three young children, and the law enforcement community by refraining from further speculation until the investigation is complete and the evidence is known.
