Duquesne President, Students Discuss SafetyPOSTED: 3:52 pm EDT September 17,
2006 PITTSBURGH -- Students said they had heard that Duquesne, a Catholic university, was a very safe campus. Now, some still believe it is, but some are not as sure."It's just the fact that everybody told me you could walk around at 3 o'clock in the morning and talk to your mom on the phone. It's just a little bit shady right now to me," student Kelly Kaminski said.Security has become an issue after five Duquesne students -- all members of the university’s basketball team -- were shot early Sunday morning. The gunman is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous."It worries me a little bit because Duquesne was supposed to be the third-safest school in the United States. But I feel safer now because I see police all over campus," student Krysta Moraczewski said.President Charles Dougherty said Duquesne is a community of faith first, so they'll pray for the victims and their families after the shocking incident. The university is offering counseling for those students who need it. It has also doubled the number of police patrols on campus for the time being.Students said they've noticed that and appreciate it, and said that it is certainly a change for the better."We were scared, of course, but we do feel a lot safer because they told us a lot about the incident. They gave us letters and let us know that there's extra security and we're OK," student Kendra Emenheiser said. Related Links: More Allegheny County News Copyright 2006 by ThePittsburghChannel.
