The following letter to the public was released by Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O'Connor's office on Wednesday.

    Dear Friends,

Since the first announcement of my illness on July 10, my family and I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from the Pittsburgh community, as well as from all over the country and around the world. The thousands of get well wishes, cards, gifts, prayers and encouraging words have lifted my spirits and touched my heart.

I'd like to extend my deepest and most sincere gratitude to everyone who hears or reads this message, and to those who have shared their similar experiences and success stories with me. Your prayers and support are lifting me over one of the biggest obstacles of my life. Because of you, and the tremendous love from my family and friends, I do not feel like I am fighting this alone.

Thank you for thinking of me and my family at this difficult time. Your faith has given me great hope. God bless you.

    Humbly,
    Bob
