FBI Searches New Castle Apartment

POSTED: 11:42 a.m. EDT September 13, 2001

The FBI searched the apartment of an Arabic-speaking physician as part of the nationwide investigation into terrorist attacks.

State police spokesman Jack Lewis confirmed that his agency was asked to help the FBI with a search of the apartment Wednesday in New Castle, about 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

The manager at the apartment complex said she spotted Arabic literature, flight manuals and computer software related to flying commercial aircraft in the apartment and called authorities, the station reported.

The search came as federal authorities were searching for suspects in the hijacking of four commercial jets Tuesday in a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. One of the planes crashed in western Pennsylvania.

The man reportedly was traced to New Mexico and his car seized from a lot at Pittsburgh International Airport and impounded by police. State police confirmed a car was seized, but referred further questions to the FBI.

FBI Supervisory Agent Doug Beldon in Albuquerque confirmed that his office was conducting a limited investigation after being contacted by the Pittsburgh office.

There has been no arrest made. No searches were conducted in New Mexico.
