Pittsburgh-Area Schools, Businesses Close

In response to the national emergency, the following precautions are being taken Wednesday in the Pittsburgh area.

  • St. Michael's School in Elizabeth, Pa., has a two-hour delay and no preschool.
  • Elizabeth-Forward School District has a two-hour delay with no morning kindergarten.
  • There have been no other reports of any new cancellations for Wednesday. Stay tuned to Action News and ThePittsburghChannel.com for any new information as it becomes available.

    Many Pittsburgh buildings and services have reopened. City, county, federal and state government offices in Pittsburgh are open. The Allegheny County Port Authority's light rail system is operating.

    Major shopping malls that closed Tuesday reopened Wednesday.

    Mellon Financial Corporation employees in western Pennsylvania reported to work as usual.

    The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University and Robert Morris College reopened. But Carlow College is closed.

    The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have postponed their playoff game against the Charleston Battery until 7:35 p.m. on Sept. 20 at Bethel Park Stadium. They will play the second game of the series Sept. 21 in Charleston.

    The Penn State-Virginia football game scheduled for Thursday has been postponed. The game tentatively has been rescheduled for Dec. 1.

    The Pitt-UAB football game has been rescheduled for Dec. 1. All Big East Conference athletic events through Sunday have been postponed.

    West Virginia's game set for Saturday has been postponed until Sept. 29.

    Bill Cowher's weekly press conference was postponed. NFL officials said the league will decide Thursday whether this weekend's games, including the Steelers' home opener, would be played as scheduled.

    The NHL canceled all of Saturday's preseason games.
