The possibility of the North Shore Connector is now a reality.

On Thursday morning, the Port Authority of Allegheny County's board of members approved the plan, which would extend the trolley line to serve PNC Park, Heinz Field and other North Shore destinations.

The project would connect the North Shore and Downtown by drilling a twin tunnel under the river at a cost of $435 million.

The Port Authority board voted on Thursday to award a $156.5 million contract to North Shore Constructors, a joint venture between West Mifflin-based Trumbull Corp. and San Francisco-based Obayashi Corp., to build the tunnels and the necessary rights of way on the North Shore.

The Port Authority has lined up $348 million in federal money and another $72.5 million in state funds for the connector project.

About $14.5 million would come from the county, but the county council must give its approval first.
