Stricter Background Checks For School Employees Sought

POSTED: 4:24 pm EDT July 6, 2006

A new proposal would require federal criminal-background checks for prospective public and private school employees in Pennsylvania.

Teachers, janitors and bus drivers would be included.

The proposal would take effect April 1 if Gov. Ed Rendell signs it.

Currently, only a state police background check is required.

The rule for imposing more stringent background checks on all school applicants is included in a school-code bill passed by state lawmakers over the weekend as part of the state budget package.
