Port Authority Official Optimistic About North Shore Connector Project

It's looking more likely that there will eventually be a light-rail extension tunneled beneath the Allegheny River to the North Shore.

Contractors for the project have extended their contracts through July 15. That gives the Port Authority time to get more federal funding in place to cover the $400 million cost.

Right now, Port Authority executive director Steve Bland said they are about $18 million short.

"It would jeopardize the project if it doesn't come through. But right now, we are optimistic that that will occur," Bland said.

The secretary of transportation and the Office of Management and Budget are reviewing the funding requests, and Bland said the early reviews are positive.
