Steelers first-round draft pick Santonio Holmes released a statement Tuesday afternoon about his arrest in Ohio on a charge of domestic violence.

"I understand that being a Pittsburgh Steeler carries along with it the demands for responsible behavior off the field. I want to apologize for the negative attention that my arrest on Monday has brought upon the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, especially in light of my previous arrest in May," Holmes said in a statement Tuesday.

Holmes met with assistant coaches and work out at the Steelers training facility on the South Side on Tuesday morning.

Holmes arrived on the South Side about 9:30 a.m.

The meeting comes a day after he was arraigned on charges of domestic violence by assault, assault and speeding after an incident in Columbus, Ohio.

However, the meeting was scheduled long before the arrest, Channel 4 Action News reporter Jake Ploeger said.

Police said Holmes was arrested early Monday morning.

"My boyfriend, my baby's daddy -- whatever you want to call him -- put his hands on me. He's leaving right now I don't know where he's going," the alleged victim said in the 911 call.

"What's he leaving in?" the 911 operator asked.

"He's leaving because I called the police," the alleged victim said.

According to officers, when they arrived at the scene they found the mother of one of Holmes' children beaten and bruised.

She told police Holmes was responsible.

Holmes' attorney Samuel Shamansky said his client pleaded not guilty, but he is embarrassed.

Holmes was released under his own recognizance. This is not Holmes' first run-in with the authorities.

Holmes, a native of Belle Glade, Fla., was arrested previously in South Beach, Fla., on a charge of disorderly conduct during a Memorial Day weekend crackdown by local authorities.

Also, a warrant was issued for Holmes' arrest last November for failing to appear in court after a car crash in which he was involved. Police cited him for speeding and driving too close.

Police said he wasn't just aggressive on the field as an Ohio State University wide receiver. In 2003, Holmes had another disorderly conduct charge for fighting in an OSU parking lot.
