The Steelers aren't sure when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will return to action.

They do know that when returns to the field, he will need a new helmet -- a more protective helmet.

Channel 4 Action News has learned the Steelers have contacted one helmet maker about designing a brand new lid for No. 7.

Manufacturer Riddell produces the Steelers' helmets.

Given Roethlisberger's facial injuries, the Steelers quarterback may turn to the same helmet worn by his backup, Charlie Batch -- the Revolution helmet.

"They've essentially increased the protection of the helmet in the jaw area of the helmet by changing the physics of the helmet," said neuropsychologist Dr. Micky Collins.

But the biggest change for Roethlisberger will be his facemask.

"The facemask he is currently using [is] ROPO -- reinforced oral protective only. It has no jaw protection," said Tim Fogarty of Century Sports.

Shutt makes facemasks for high school, colleges and professional teams.

With the Steelers' input, they can create a mask to protect Roethlisberger's broken jaw as it heals.

"Jaw and oral protection, along with an extension. And Shutt, the manufacturer, will probably customize this facemask," Fogarty said. "And you see, the longer extension gives it the protection and the doctors will decide if they need to bring another piece to the side."

But will the mask really protect Roethlisberger's jaw?

Look no further than 1991, when Paul Coffey wore a similar mask for his broken jaw in the Stanley Cup finals.

So, get ready for a new look for No. 7 on the field.

Off the field, it's Roethlisberger's choice whether he wear a helmet.
