Doctors Optimistic About Roethlisberger Release; Fans Show Support

The investigation into the motorcycle accident that landed Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the hospital continues.

Roethlisberger was riding his Suzuki Hayabusa on Second Avenue when he collided with a car near the 10th Street Bridge late Monday morning, police said. He fractured his upper and lower jaws, broke his nose, fractured other facial bones, had multiple head lacerations, suffered a mild concussion, and lost two teeth and chipped several others.

On Wednesday, Pittsburgh Police Chief Dom Costa said that in any crash investigation they do a complete background check on the drivers involved.

Nothing is official until they get something certified from Harrisburg, Costa said, since something can be run on a computer and resulting information can prove not to be current or true.

Meanwhile, fans continue to show an outpouring of support for the injured quarterback. An ice cream and candy shop called Chocolate Celebrations and the Milkshake Factory in the South Side -- as well as apartments above it -- have hung a "Get Well Ben" banner.

A Web site -- getwellsoonben.com -- also offers Roethlisberger best wishes.

Roethlisbeger is listed in fair condition at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, but doctors said he may be released in the next three to five days -- or possibly as soon as Thursday.

Roethlisberger's accident isn't sitting well with Las Vegas oddsmakers.

They said the odds of the Steelers repeating as Super Bowl champs got a lot longer after Monday.

According to the Las Vegas Hilton, before the accident, the Steelers were 8 to 1 favorites to win Super Bowl XLI.

Since the accident, the odds have increased to 20 to 1.

Because so much remains uncertain, the hotel has stopped taking wagers on who will win the Steelers' division -- or even the home opener against Miami.
