Montana Says Roethlisberger Responsible To Himself

Former quarterback Joe Montana may not ride motorcycles, but he was a big-time Super Bowl quarterback.

Montana, a western-Pennsylvania native, was a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, leading them to four Super Bowls.

And in that respect, Montana had something to say about the attention Ben Roethlisberger received after Monday's accident.

"It's a difficult situation and I feel bad for the Steeler fans and the organization," Montana said. "But I feel just as bad, if not worse, for his family and him."

"When you are on a motorcycle there isn't a lot of protection at all and the chances of getting hurt physically are pretty good."

Roethlisberger was riding his Suzuki Hayabusa on Second Avenue when he collided with a car near the 10th Street Bridge late Monday morning, police said. He fractured his upper and lower jaws, broke his nose, fractured other facial bones, had multiple head lacerations, suffered a mild concussion, and lost two teeth and chipped several others.

"The main thing is his own safety," Montana said. "You just have to think about yourself and think forward to not only your career, but the rest of your life. I think that is more important than worrying about any part of the team."

"There is some responsibility there looking forward and going to the team, but to what degree I think his own safety and welfare is more important than any part of that," Montana said. "But first, he should be thinking about himself."
