Officials: Wecht's Claims About FBI, DA Are 'Conspiracy Theories'POSTED: 5:35 pm EDT May 25,
2006 ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. -- Attorneys for Cyril Wecht argue that computers and other evidence were improperly seized from the coroner's office during the probe of whether Wecht used the public office to benefit his private business.Prosecutors respond in their latest document that Wecht and his staff all knew county policy on use of computers. They said that Wecht and his staff all signed an acknowledgement that they did not have an expectation of privacy using those computers and that they are not to be use for private business purposes. The U.S. attorney's office said the defense offers a "tangle of conspiracy theories regarding the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office and the FBI."But the prosecution said the district attorney's financial relationship with his former law firm is irrelevant to this case and that it was approved by the county and appears to be in accordance with state and county ethics rules. The prosecution said its allegations are supported by proof.Next week, a federal judge will rule on the defense motion to suppress evidence.Hearings come next month on whether to unseal court documents about the lead FBI agent in the Wecht investigation.
