Saint Vincent College held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning to mark the construction of the $12 million Fred Rogers Center and Saint Vincent College Conference Center.

The new center for early learning and children's media is being constructed in Latrobe.

It will feature space for the Fred Rogers archives, along with a library science area, workshops, exhibits and a conference center with room for up to 300 people.

"We began this project with profound respect for Fred's lifelong commitment to children and families, with sincere gratitude to the Rogers family, and with deep resolve to honor the teacher, man of faith and friend who touched so many lives," said James F. Will, Saint Vincent College Vice Chancellor and President.

Fred Rogers died of cancer in 2003.
